Perfect Partners: Gardening with Natives and All Sorts of Edibles

Gardening with natives and growing our own food are two wonderful activities that help us connect with nature and use our land in a positive ways. This presentation discusses how best to combine natives and edibles in the home garden, why this partnership is so rewarding for both the gardener/chef and wildlife, and which plants make the best companions. Horticultural consultant and freelance garden writer Lili Singer is Director of Special Projects and Adult Education at the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wildflowers and Native Plants, Sun Valley, CA. Lili brings a lifetime of gardening and educating about gardening with native plants to the nursery and we are very pleased to have her here!

The Baja California Plant Field Guide is a manual to native and naturalized plants of the Baja California peninsula, Mexico. This useful guide can be used for the entire Sonoran Desert and for Southern California, as over 50% of the species covered also occur in these regions.  The legendary Jon P. Rebman has been the Curator of Botany at the San Diego Natural History Museum since 1996 and is renowned for his research and documentation of plants in Baja, Mexico, San Diego, and the Imperial County regions. Cat Waters: A Case Study – Creating an Urban Wildlife Sanctuary

Long-time customer and friend of the nursery Cat Waters will share about her experiences converting an empty lot next door into a beautiful Urban Wildlife Sanctuary using California native plants. With the intent of one day donating this now-treasured property to the city, Cat and and her husband have created an oasis for birds, butterflies, lizards and a host of beneficial insects that help them maintain a healthy urban vegetable garden. Cat will share pictures from the journey as well as a lot of the finished product. This case study will inspire every gardener to convert any space into a gorgeous sanctuary for wildlife and for the humans too!
