Tree of Life Nursery is seeking a dedicated, friendly and enthusiastic retail sales associate to assist our customers. This is an outstanding opportunity to work in a unique and congenial environment, to learn about California native plants or apply what you already know, and to play a vital role in a team effort to expand the use of native plants in California landscapes.


  • Provide helpful customer service in person, on the phone and via email with accurate and helpful advice. 
  • Understand and follow proper procedures regarding cash register, internet orders, phone orders, and shipping
  • Provide support with watering, weeding and planting of gardens
  • Work 3-5 days a week, including Saturdays and occasional holiday weekends
  • Attend all scheduled training and employee meetings.


  • Ability to identify and provide accurate care and selection instructions for California native plants and gift shop items 
  • Good written communication and use of electronic media and paperwork.
  • Ability to operate our inventory and POS system for the functions of sales, customer data, delivery, internet orders, etc.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to stand, walk and provide physical support for up to 8 hours in an outdoor environment
  • Ability to lift and move merchandise weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with other employees in a team environment.


  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Certification or Horticulture enrollment or degree preferred
  • Previous sales experience


This is a full-time outdoor labor position.


Planting, transplanting and maintaining nursery stock in a container plant nursery. Manually plant, cultivate, and harvest plants for nursery sales. 

Use hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, and knives. 

Duties may include applying fertilizers; transplanting, weeding, thinning, or pruning crops; applying pesticides; cleaning, packing, and loading harvested products. 

May construct trellises, repair fences and farm buildings, or participate in irrigation activities.


Site preparation, planting, building paths, swales, etc.

Handling rock, soil materials and plants.

Planting, transplanting, and maintaining custom design /build native gardens


Use of gardening hand tools

Occasional use of lightweight handheld power tools

Lifting and carrying plants and materials typical in this field.

Perform tasks typical of farm, ranch, and construction site environments


Valid California Driver’s License and good driving record


Tree of Life Nursery grows California native plants.

We are seeking someone who has the desire to be part of a contemporary, collaborative, and inventive team committed to the highest standards of quality and service.

The Assistant Grower reports directly to the Head Grower and works closely with the Sales, Inventory and General Manager. This position oversees all aspects of growing California Native Plants including pesticide applications, irrigation management and all cultural practices to ensure crop perfection. Plant cultural responsibility begins at potting and extends through harvest.


  • Direct and supervise the nursery production to meet timelines and sale forecast targets.
  • Monitor growing areas and crops daily.
  • Ensure that accepted IPM procedures are being maintained.
  • Supervise all pesticide applications within an assigned section; apply pesticides, chemicals and biologicals as required for maintaining crop health.
  • Monitor and adjust nutritional programs after testing and / or consultation with the Head Grower.
  • Maintain pruning procedures and schedules.
  • Ensure timely spacing of plants.
  • Monitor and adjust irrigation applications daily with irrigation technicians.
  • Manage and plan space allocation for seasonal environment stresses on sensitive plants scheduled from production.
  • Assist Head Grower to schedule and implement all post and pre-emergent herbicide applications.
  • Assist in the implementation of our IPM Program.
  • Assist research and development department with production profiling and optimization.
  • Train assistants in your section as necessary to perform efficiently and effectively, and to company standards.
  • Prepare daily task plans for all section associates.
  • Provide timely labor, cultural, and inventory adjustment data; develop and maintain growing records that include specifics about plant growth, fertilization, pest problems and any treatment.
  • Communicate frequently with the Head Grower about priorities, solving problems, and any other issues.


  • Continuous improvement and optimization of production processes and timelines, by variety.
  • Lowest cost of production.
  • Efficient use of labor, equipment, and production resources.


  • A degree in Horticulture or significant related industry experience is necessary for consideration.
  • Experience across multiple plant categories including woody ornamentals, perennials, annuals, grasses and trees. Understanding California plant communities and their interrelationships is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of germination and propagation parameters and requirements is beneficial.
  • High level of organizational skills with specific ability to prioritize activities, manage workflow and optimize labor and equipment utilization.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Excel and Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish speaking is a plus.
