Lecture and Book Signing: California Native Gardening: A Month By Month Guide

Guest Speaker: Author Helen Popper

Finally!  A month-by-month guide to gardening with native plants in a state that follows a unique, nontraditional seasonal rhythm. Beginning in October, when much of California leaves the dry season behind and prepares for its own green “spring”, Helen Popper provides detailed, calendar-based information for both beginning and experienced native gardeners.  Books will be available for sale and the author will both lecture and sign the book.  Join us!

Celebrate the last Saturday of June and the end of our Full Saturdays of being open with a big last hurrah!  Hour Summer hours begin the following Saturday  – we’ll be open half days on Saturdays in July and August.

11:30a – 1:30 pm “There really IS such a thing as a FREE lunch”

Menu is street carne asada tacos.  Join us and celebrate the Summer months that are well suited for gardening in the morning and taking off for refreshment in the long afternoons.  Some of you have offered in the past – if you have a delectable treat you’d like to share with us, bring it!

DIR Program will be available this July as well as a one-off Replace Your Lawn Workshop…

JULY

Saturdays in July – Designer in Residence – we will be making DIR appointments available this July and August – the schedule is still being finalized.  Reservations will be open on Friday, June 22, 2012.

Saturday, July 14th – REPLACE YOUR LAWN: Kill the Grass! Warm Season Edition. The summer is a great time to get rid of your warm-season grass.  Don’t know what “warm season grass” means?  Come to the workshop to learn more!

We’re planning a VERY special Art Event this Summer at the Nursery.  Stay tuned for it and Save the date to be in town for August 3-4.  Stay tuned!

Chaparral, Wrentits, and Grizzly Bears: A different way to see California

Guest Speaker: Richard Halsey

*NATIONAL TRAIL DAY!! – Hike to follow talk!*

Of all the distinct, native plant communities in California, only one is found throughout and only one can be said to represent the state’s most characteristic wilderness: the chaparral. Join us as we explore the chaparral’s unique natural history, reveal the truth concerning its many myths and surprising mysteries, and why it represents such a vital link to nature for all Californians.

Guest Speaker: Richard Halsey – writer, photographer and Director of the California Chaparral Institute. Richard will be available to sign his book: Fire, Chaparral, And Survival In Southern California and the book will be available for purchase.

Hike to follow talk! Join both Mike Evans and Richard Halsey on a chaparral hike.  Bring a day pack with water lunch, gasoline for 40 miles round trip from the nursery (it’s less, but always wise to be prepared), hike is in National Forest near Tenaja trail.  Caravan to trail head hike approx 3-4 hrs.  Moderate, some grade change, good trail.  Prepare for WARM weather.  Lots of water and sun protection a must.  Its going to be hot!

Come create a native container!  First, learn about container gardening with native plants with a free lecture about gardening with native plants in containers!  After the talk, purchase plants and containers, and we will help you assemble your container with complimentary soil.  Please join us to create a unique decorative item for your own home, or, a cool gift for Dad!

Expert Series: Native Plants of Baja California and the Sonoran Desert

Guest Speaker: Dave Buchanan and Mike Evans

The elusive Dave Buchanan, seasoned native plant landscaper and Baja aficionado will partner with our own resident Baja and Sonoran Desert rat Mike Evans to show you the diversity of plants available from the Baja and the Sonoran Desert.  Plants from these regions of North America are fascinating and they make fabulous additions to any native plant garden with many summer flowering options.  If you like Baja or Sonoran Desert plants you should come to the nursery on this day. It is very likely that plants we do not usually have available will be available for purchase this day and this day only.
