Creating a Vibrant Urban Habitat – Case Study

Cat and Robert Waters will return to the nursery to showcase their incredible urban habitat garden located in Downey. What began as a neighboring vacant lot has been carefully and lovingly crafted into an attractive native plant oasis for birds and also incorporates a vegetable garden. Avid birders, Cat and Robert have spotted 109 different bird species in or flying over this garden (as well as additional birds “under review”). This year, the garden will be included in the Theodore Payne Garden Tour and it will be featured for the second time in WildBird magazine. Come and see images of their development process and get inspired by Cat and Robert by hearing their story and sharing in their infectious enthusiasm!

Bees Are Disappearing, But You Can Help!

cactus flower beeProvide essential nutrients for bees by planting a variety of flowering native plants in your garden. Bee populations are known to be in decline due to habitat loss, pesticides, and parasites that are stressing populations and causing die-offs. Bob Allen (aka: Bug Bob) will comment on these pressures and introduce UC Press’s newly published book: “A Field Guide to the Common Bees of California.” Learn how to attract these important pollinators to your garden. We often consider the decline of honeybees with some urgency, at this workshop we will also consider some of the other bee populations that are also dwindling. Honeybees and native bees alike benefit from gardens that provide rich and varied nutrient sources. Many diverse flowers make for happy people and happy pollinators!
